Coral Converts Sunscreen Chemical Into Toxins

(arstechnica.com) – Over the past few years several locations have banned the use of sunblocks for beachgoers as they found the sunscreen to be affecting the health of nearby coral reefs. Researchers at Stanford University have found that the coral converts a chemical in sunscreen that harmlessly absorbs UV light into a chemical that damages biological molecules after being exposed to UV. Knowing the problem may help scientists going forward to work around the issue. Read More
