Leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean Race from New Zealand to Brazil was one of the roughest legs in the history of the race. One sailor, John Fisher, was lost overboard and never recovered, forcing the crew of Scallywag on which he was sailing to drop out and make for port in Chile. Scallywag is expected to arrive in Brazil on Thursday morning.
Another boat, Vestas 11th Hour Racing was dismasted 100 miles from the Falkland Island. They diverted under power to the Falklands where the crew managed to set up a jury rig. On Tuesday of this week Vestas made it to Brazil with five days to go before the start of Leg 8 that will take the fleet to Newport, RI. Read more and watch the video.
