{"id":3861,"date":"2012-10-17T21:48:47","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T00:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bwsailing.com\/news\/?p=921"},"modified":"2012-10-17T21:48:47","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T00:48:47","slug":"americas-cup-catamaran-capsizes-in-san-francisco-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/americas-cup-catamaran-capsizes-in-san-francisco-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"America\u2019s Cup Catamaran Capsizes in San Francisco Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Another week, another capsize &#8211; this time with Oracle&#8217;s AC72&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/bwsailing.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/oracle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-922 alignleft\" title=\"oracle\" src=\"http:\/\/bwsailing.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/oracle-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A boating outing for the Oracle racing team training for the America\u2019s Cup in the San Francisco Bay turned into a upside-down surprise when their 72-foot catamaran <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/headlines\/2012\/10\/americas-cup-catamaran-capsizes-off-calif\/\">capsized<\/a> and was pulled out to sea. There were no injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The 11-member Oracle racing crew, along with additional sailors on board for the training,\u00a0 were\u00a0 sailing the $8-10 million ship, an AC72, around 3 p.m., PDT Tuesday when strong winds caused the craft\u2019s bow to heave and slam sideways into the bay just off the shore, a team spokesperson told\u00a0ABCNews.com today.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an incident description on the team\u2019s website, tactician Tom Slingsby said the wind was blowing at about 25 knots and as the crew was turning the boat away from the wind it went over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the nose went down, the wing hit and a few guys went in the water,\u201d Slingsby said in the release. \u201cWe were unsure if the wing would snap, so we all climbed off the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the entire crew all made it back to shore aboard support boats, the AC72, designed to \u201cfly on water,\u201d was pulled out further into the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Safety boats dispatched by the Oracle team to tow the bow back had to give in to the tide and follow the boat along as it was swept at least four miles past the Golden Gate Bridge.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0It took until 1 a.m. Wednesday, after the tide had passed, for crew to return the boat to its home base at Pier 80.<\/p>\n<p>Crew members will pull the boat out of the water today and then begin the process of\u00a0 conducting a damage assessment, according to the team\u2019s spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did something we had hoped we would never do, and that\u2019s capsize an AC72,\u201d skipper Jimmy Spithill said in the team\u2019s online statement. \u00a0\u201dThe most important part is that all the crew are safe, and no injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spithill was also skipper in 2010 when the team won the 33rd America\u2019s Cup.\u00a0 The training run was part of their preparation for the 34<sup>th<\/sup> America\u2019s Cup finals which will be held next summer in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question this is a setback,\u201d Spithill said.\u00a0 \u201cThis will be a big test for our team\u2026I\u2019m still confident in the team we\u2019ve got and we can go out and win again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/headlines\/2012\/10\/americas-cup-catamaran-capsizes-off-calif\/\">abcnews.go.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another week, another capsize &#8211; this time with Oracle&#8217;s AC72&#8230; A boating outing for the Oracle racing team training for the America\u2019s Cup in the San [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8,15],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3861","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cruising-news","category-news-and-notes"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3861","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3861"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3861\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3861"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3861"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/bw\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3861"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
