What does three blasts from a ship’s horn tell us about which way it is intending to move?

Thanks to last week’s Mindbender winner, David Dieter, for his answer to the question: “What are the doors called at the entrance to the companionway steps from the cockpit?” If they are actual doors, they are called “companionway doors”. If they are boards rather than doors, they are called “hatchboards” (or washboards).
