Who made the first solo sailing circumnavigation?

Send your answer to cruisingcompass@bwsailing.com. The winner, selected randomly from correct answers, will receive a Blue Water Sailing hat.

The winner of last week’s Mindbender is Sean Milligan who gave a long and amusing answer to the question of how do you use the knot called the sheep shank:

“When do I use it? Never have in the almost 60 years since I learn’t how to make it as a Boy Scout. Have not met anyone who has used it in a real life situation either. Even so it was included in a basic seamanship course that I taught for a few years.  It’s designed to shorten a rope and will hold under load, but is a bit iffy even then unless whippings are used to stop it letting go if the rope slacks slightly. It may be all right for a scout camp exercise, but I would not use it at sea.”
