Warning to East Coast Sailors: 70 Containers Lost Overboard Off North Carolina

Running into a half submerged container while making an offshore passage has to be a blue water sailor’s worst nightmare. You can lose you boat and maybe your life in a heartbeat and never see what is was that sunk you. Here’s a warning form March 4th by Mike Schuler that is published on gcaptain.com.

 

A 10,000 TEU containership lost about 70 containers overboard on Saturday night while about 17 miles off Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. The U.S. Coast Guard is warning mariners of navigation hazards. The 324-meter Maersk Shanghai contacted USCG watch standers at Sector North Carolina’s command center via VHF-FM marine radio channel 16 on Saturday evening notifying them that they lost approximately 70 to 73 cargo containers due to high winds and heavy seas.
