(gCaptain) – Scripps Institute of Oceanography has been recording sounds from the arctic for years in order to better understand the impact of climate change on the area’s marine life. The bouy they used records all ambient noise, from ships’ propellers to the high pitch noises from Beluga whales, otherwise known as the Canaries of the Sea. Two summers of heavy ice prevented annual maintenance of the buoy which drifted loose for 10 days until a Swedish research vessel fortuitously drifted by and was able to rescue the buoy. Read More
