The Size of Whales

(The Atlantic) – Have you ever wondered why whales, sea lions and walruses are so large? Some scientists speculate that it happens as water frees mammals from the force of gravity, thus allowing heavier bodies than would work on land. Other scientists including William Gearty of Stanford University speculate that the water encourages the large size as vast amounts of fat and blubber are needed to counteract the loss of body heat.
