The most complete answer is from Annie Washburn, Bellingham, Washington who emailed: “Turk’s Head knots have several uses. They can be decorative bracelets or the marker for the king spoke on a boat’s wheel. But, the initial use of the knot is as a weight at the end of a light throwing line used to retrieve heavier mooring likes on larger vessels.”
