Morgan Completes Vineyard Leg of 38th Voyage

By Administrator · On June 19, 2014

The Charles W. Morgan safely navigated from Newport, Rhode Island, to Vineyard Haven on Wednesday, a leg of the 38th Voyage that turned out to be rougher than some expected.

“We were rocking and rolling,” said Standard-Times photographer Peter Pereira, who was aboard the whaleship. The open sea was much rougher than Vineyard Sound, and even some crew members were sick.

The ship left Fort Adams State Park in Newport at 8 a.m. and by 9:30 was headed into Vineyard Sound under tow at 7 knots. She was accompanied by the tug Sirius and the eastern-rigged Mystic Seaport dragger Ro-Ann.

The ship is being accompanied by a 19-meter yacht out of Newport, the Moonracer.

The Morgan set its sails as it headed into open water, and arrived, again under tow, at 4 p.m. in Vineyard Haven. It will depart for a nine-day stay in New Bedford next week, probably on June 25, weather permitting.
