Boyan Slat is the president and founder of the\u00a0Ocean Cleanup<\/a>\u00a0and creator of a technology he says can clean half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in a decade. He first presented his idea at a\u00a0TEDx talk in the Netherlands two years ago, and is now preparing to attend the\u00a0\u201cOur Ocean\u201d conference\u00a0hosted by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.<\/p>\n

Slat said he thought of his plastic-capturing concept years ago while diving in Greece and seeing more\u00a0plastic bottles<\/a>\u00a0than fish. Since then, he has developed a website that includes all of the technology\u2019s specs, a feasibility study and a campaign to fund it. He says his team has embarked on three gyre expeditions within six months. He shot this video with\u00a0I Am Eco Warrior<\/a>\u00a0to explain his mission and how he hopes to accomplish it with floating barriers.<\/p>\n

Slat\u2019s idea\u00a0hasn\u2019t been received well<\/a>\u00a0by all, but he chose to take his critics head-on in a recent response\u00a0blog post<\/a>. It serves as a complement to the\u00a0530-page report<\/a>\u00a0on feasibility and further explains the idea shouldn\u2019t be written off as a kid\u2019s idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe oceans are the most important life-support systems of our planet,\u201d Slat said. \u201cIt regulates the\u00a0climate<\/a>, it produces oxygen. The vast majority of biodiversity can be found in the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n
