“Long distance rowers, paddlers and sailors will compete next summer in a first-ever\u00a0Race\u00a0to\u00a0Alaska<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that offers a $10,000 prize \u2013 and no fuel bill.<\/p>\n

The Northwest Maritime Center, based in Port Townsend, WA, has begun accepting applicants for the unique, non-motorized, 750-mile marathon scheduled to begin\u00a0next June in Port Townsend.<\/p>\n

The cash prize of $10,000 will go to the first competitor to reach Ketchikan without the aid of an engine, according to Maritime Center executive director Jake Beattie.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a Gold Rush thing,\u201d Beattie says.\u00a0\u00a0If you get there first, you win ten grand.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Race\u00a0to\u00a0Alaska\u00a0is scheduled to begin\u00a0June 4, 2015,\u00a0on Port Townsend Bay, with a 40-mile first leg to Victoria, BC.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Any paddler, rower or sailor is invited to participate in that leg without committing to the full\u00a0raceto Ketchikan.<\/p>\n

Racers who complete the first leg without assistance will qualify for the full\u00a0race, scheduled to begin the following day.<\/p>\n

Contestants will not be allowed to have any kind of motor on board \u2013 neither gas nor electric,\u00a0\u00a0Beattie says.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0There is no limit on the number of crew, but no substitutions will be allowed.\u00a0\u00a0To qualify for the prize, racers must be on board for the entire\u00a0race.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople do this trip in engineless boats every year,\u201d Beattie says. \u201cbut there\u2019s never been a\u00a0race.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Our goal is to do something cool that inspires people to adventure, that pays for itself, and which helps raise awareness about accessibility to the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Successful\u00a0race\u00a0applicants should be proficient in navigation, first aid, radio use and logistics, and should be able to demonstrate that they have the physical ability and equipment to make the voyage.<\/p>\n
