{"id":25809,"date":"2016-06-29T19:57:45","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T19:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/?p=25809"},"modified":"2016-06-30T13:24:04","modified_gmt":"2016-06-30T13:24:04","slug":"clipper-race-crew-member-medevaced-from-north-atlantic-ocean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/2016\/06\/clipper-race-crew-member-medevaced-from-north-atlantic-ocean\/","title":{"rendered":"Clipper Race Crew Member Medevaced from North Atlantic Ocean"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"_n_N3\">\n<div class=\"conductorContent\">\n<div class=\"_rp_S4 ShowReferenceAttachmentsLinks\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"_rp_S4 disableTextSelection\">\n<div class=\"_rp_V4 disableTextSelection _rp_W4 customScrollBar scrollContainer _rp_X4\">\n<div class=\"_rp_35\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"_rp_05\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"_rp_15 rpHighlightAllClass rpHighlightBodyClass allowTextSelection\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"_rp_25 ms-font-weight-regular ms-font-color-neutralDark isMessageBodyInPopout\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<div class=\"rps_2b69\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<table id=\"x_backgroundTable\" border=\"0\" width=\"800\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<div id=\"x_email-wrapper\">\n<p>Chris Drummond, 62, from High Wycombe, UK a crew member on board <em>IchorCoal<\/em><em>, <\/em>had complained of severe chest pains but was stabilized after receiving care from one of the team\u2019s two on board medics, a Consultant Anesthetist.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to carry out a medical evacuation of the crew member from the racing yacht to Canada was made as a precaution based on advice from specialist remote telemedicine doctors at ClipperTelemed+.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the strong prevailing conditions around 220 miles from the Nova Scotian coast, Canada, the primary rescue plan had to be abandoned, and the secondary plan implemented with two helicopter crew lowered on to help winch Chris off into the Rescue 913 helicopter at 0914 UTC today, Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Chris was then transferred to Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Halifax where he is undergoing tests and receiving the necessary care that he requires.<\/p>\n<p><em>IchorCoal <\/em>Skipper Rich Gould praised his crew following the medevac and described the difficult and delicate rescue operation which involved two Cormorant rescue helicopters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis might be an amateur race, but from what I have seen from my team in the past 24 hours I can assure the crew are anything but!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe total time of the whole operation was little more than 30 minutes from when Rescue 913 began to track us for the primary plan.\u00a0 Once we changed to the secondary plan it took 14 minutes from the time that we made contact with their guide line.\u00a0 It was very impressive stuff &#8211; 14 minutes to lower two men, collect the casualty and extract all three people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI must say a massive thank you to all involved in the rescue, everyone from the Clipper Race team to the doctors at ClipperTelemed+, each operator that I was in contact with from Falmouth, UK, the USA and Canada, both on the phone and via email, the air crews of both the C130 and Rescue 913 and of course the winchmen that came down on the wire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMyself and the crew would like to wish Chris a swift recovery.\u00a0 We are thinking of you,\u201d Rich added.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>IchorCoal <\/em>team is now motoring back to the position where it ceased racing and will restart the race to Derry-Londonderry, Northern Ireland, following the race start from New York on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The crew, and the eleven other competing teams are now on their final leg of the 40,000 nautical mile journey which concludes in London on Saturday 30 July.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Clipper Ventures and PRAXES Medical Group launched the global joint venture ClipperTelemed+ to provide remote medical support to international seafarers and adventurers in some of the world\u2019s most inhospitable areas.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors at the PRAXES HQ in Halifax, Canada, responded to the satellite phone call from on board <em>IchorCoal <\/em>and gave medical advice remotely.
