Here\u2019s the report in the <\/em>Newport Daily\u00a0News<em> of the very dramatic finish in Newport Harbor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0Scott Barrett<br \/>\nSports Editor<\/p>\n<p>NEWPORT \u2014 From out of the fog came the red boat, making a last-minute pass en route to a stunning victory on Leg 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MAPFRE<\/em>, a Spanish team, rallied to edge <em>Team Brunel<\/em> and win the 5,700-nautical-mile leg from Itajai, Brazil, to Newport that began on April 22. Sixteen days at sea, and it came down to the final minute. On the small stretch of sea that separates Newport from Jamestown, <em>MAPFRE<\/em> made up a 0.3-mile deficit and passed the Dutch team just as they rounded the northern tip of Fort Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Officially, 61 seconds was the deciding margin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unbelievable,\u201d MAPFRE skipper Xabi Fern\u00e1ndez said after the wild finish. \u201cI can\u2019t be happier.
