{"id":39727,"date":"2022-09-26T13:50:34","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T13:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/?p=39727"},"modified":"2022-09-26T13:50:34","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T13:50:34","slug":"doris-colgate-newest-sailing-hall-of-fame-inductee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/2022\/09\/doris-colgate-newest-sailing-hall-of-fame-inductee\/","title":{"rendered":"Doris Colgate Newest Sailing Hall of Fame Inductee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Longtime Sail America Member Doris Colgate, Presi-\u2028dent and CEO of Offshore Sailing School has breen inducted\u2028 into the National Sailing Hall of Fame\u2028.<\/p>\n<p>Doris Honecker Colgate has been at the forefront of sailing instruction and she has\u2028been a leading advocate for advancing opportunities for women in sailing since 1969.\u2028 She and her husband, Steve, (2015 Inductee) built the Offshore Sailing School into\u2028 a successful business that has helped many people enjoy their time on the water \u2028safely. Over the past 53 years they have taught 160,000 people with courses that have \u2028included beginning sailing, adventure cruising and advanced racing techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2028Colgates were efficient partners. Steve raced in the America\u2019s Cup trials, the Olympic \u2028Games, and in many of the world\u2019s great ocean races. Doris became President of the\u2028 company in 1978 and built the operation into the largest sailing school in the United \u2028States. They have operated sailing training facilities in locations ranging from New\u2028 York to Florida to Wisconsin and throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas. In 1990 Doris founded the National Women\u2019s Sailing Association (name was later changed to\u2028the National Women\u2019s Sailing Foundation) to create more awareness of sailing among \u2028women and to help women to build confidence in their sailing skills.<\/p>\n<p>In 1991 she launched \u201cAdventureSail\u201d a mentoring program for at-risk girls.\u2028 Doris Honecker grew up in Bethesda, Maryland along with two younger sisters. The \u2028family moved to Paris, France where she learned to speak French. She graduated\u2028 from Antioch College in Ohio. A few years later she ended up in New York City working at <em>Yachting Magazine<\/em> for Robert Bavier, Jr., the publisher and the skipper of a\u2028 winning America\u2019s Cup crew. Doris was fascinated by the happiness her co-workers \u2028seemed to display. She figured it was because they went sailing. So, she took sailing lessons at the Offshore Sailing School\u2028 on City Island, New York. She met Steve after completing a summer course and they eventually married on December 17,\u20281969. A few months later she left <em>Yachting<\/em> to work alongside Steve at the Offshore Sailing School.<\/p>\n<p>Both were prolific writers. \u2028Doris has published five books on her own and co-authored two more books with Steve.\u2028 The Colgates worked with author Herb McCormick on a book titled, <em>Offshore High<\/em>. The sub-title reads, <em>Grand Prix Yacht\u2028Racing \u2013 Big Business \u2013 Epic Love Story<\/em>. They created a boat, the Colgate 26, specifically to teach sailing. The United \u2028States Naval Academy acquired a fleet of 30 of the boats to teach Midshipmen the basics of sailing.
