Many thanks to all readers who took the time to fill out last week’s survey on paper charts on a cruising boat. 78% of those who answered\u00a0 carry paper charts as a back up to their digital charter plotters.\u00a0 Of those readers,\u00a0 58% carry a full set, 36% carry just the general small scale paper charts and a few cruising guides, and 6% carry the general small scale charts plus a sampling of harbor charts along the planned route. Of those readers who do not carry paper charts as a back up, 55% use a standalone laptop or tablet with digital charts and a GPS as back up, while 28% rely on a smartphone with digital charting apps and 16% reply on a handheld GPS with built-in charts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
