{"id":8165,"date":"2012-06-06T15:50:40","date_gmt":"2012-06-06T20:50:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/?p=8165"},"modified":"2014-06-27T03:32:28","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T03:32:28","slug":"find-a-summer-sailstice-event-near-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/2012\/06\/find-a-summer-sailstice-event-near-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Sailstice Celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sun2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8264\" title=\"sun\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/sun2-300x123.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the point of a global sailing celebration?\u00a0 The diversity and factions within sailing often seem to pit sailor against sailor competing for attention for their particular form of participation.\u00a0 Summer Sailstice, now in its 12th year, is conceived as a way to unite this diverse and widely dispersed sailing culture by bringing visibility, showcasing the varied paths to participation \u2013 and having some fun getting all sailors to sail \u2018together\u2019 wherever they are.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>These days it seems like there\u2019s too much focus on the boat and not on the activity.\u00a0 In this case, we should focus on sail-ing not sail-boats.\u00a0 You know the club bar talk &#8211; multihulls are better than monohulls, kiteboards over windsurfers, racing one-design is better than PHRF racing, wood is better than fiberglass \u2013 and on and on it goes.\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t there just be a moment when we all realize, first and foremost, getting on the water under sail is what everyone enjoys.\u00a0 Should we really care how?\u00a0\u00a0 There\u2019s no better sight than a Bay filled with sailboats \u2013 even if no two are alike.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>The timing is right &#8211; June 23, 2012<br \/>\n<\/strong>By the third week of June, school is out, the summer solstice is the official, celestial start of summer and there are more daylight sailing hours than any other time of year.\u00a0 It\u2019s the ideal date for sailing to secure for a dedicated sailing holiday.\u00a0 With all sailors helping bring attention to this event we can create a mark on the calendar when the world becomes aware that it\u2019s not summer time \u2013 it\u2019s sailing time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does it bring sailors together?<br \/>\n<\/strong>From a global perspective sailing is too small to spend time worrying about how or what people choose to sail. First we\u2019d like them to choose any sailing.\u00a0 There are sailors who love the speed, technique and technology of something like a foiling Moth but there are craftsman who love the smell of sawdust and varnish with the desire to preserve sailing\u2019s heritage.\u00a0 When does the foiling Moth sailor sail \u2018together\u2019 with a beautifully restored Beetle Cat?\u00a0 Summer Sailstice is a moment to savor and celebrate all the ways we sail \u2013 and do it all together.\u00a0 We talk about inclusion and this is the time to be inclusive \u2013 all people, all sailboats, all places.\u00a0 Just sail.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, as more people and clubs have joined in it\u2019s been interesting to discover more about where and how people sail.\u00a0 Sailors have participated in all 50 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces and over 40 countries in both salt and fresh water.\u00a0 Now that\u2019s cool!\u00a0 It\u2019s just hard to imagine how many places people are getting out sailing.\u00a0 Summer Sailstice gives a one-day snapshot of where and how everyone is sailing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it affect the sailing community?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Summer Sailstice can help build sailing by creating a template for all organizations to use to bring attention to their sailing activities.\u00a0\u00a0 At any one time there are an endless number of dedicated sailors creating and hosting terrific sailing events to connect their fleet or local sailing community &#8211; you\u2019ve probably been on one of those committees, but they\u2019re small.\u00a0 They\u2019re lots of work and they don\u2019t get the attention they deserve.\u00a0 If all sailors worked on one event together they can leverage off each others efforts while staying focused on their particular aspect of sailing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do sailors like Summer Sailstice?<br \/>\n<\/strong>In the end, all sailors feel connected even if they participate in wildly divergent ways.\u00a0 Additionally, sailors are naturally enthusiastic about their pastime and want to connect around it and share it with others.\u00a0\u00a0 Finally, sailing is exclusive, not because of the traditional elitist perception but because it involves a level of skill achieved over time.\u00a0 It\u2019s a club anyone can join but not without an appreciation and dedication to the art of sailing.\u00a0 There\u2019s a physical and intellectual aspect and, for many, almost a spiritual aspect of moving across the water under the power of wind and sail.\u00a0 Those who participate understand and taking a moment to celebrate it is something more and more sailors are taking the time to recognize.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple to sign up at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.summersailstice.com\/\">www.summersailstice.com<\/a>, take a sail \u2013 however you most enjoy it \u2013 and celebrate with all sailors around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/ussailing.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/summer-sailstice-sailing-celebration.html\">www.ussailing.blogspot.com<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s the point of a global sailing celebration?\u00a0 The diversity and factions within sailing often seem to pit sailor against sailor competing for attention for their particular form of participation.\u00a0 Summer Sailstice, now in its 12th year, is conceived as a way to unite this diverse and widely dispersed sailing culture by bringing visibility, showcasing the varied paths to participation \u2013 and having some fun getting all sailors to sail \u2018together\u2019 wherever they are.
