{"id":8389,"date":"2012-06-13T01:26:23","date_gmt":"2012-06-13T06:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/?p=8389"},"modified":"2014-06-27T03:32:27","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T03:32:27","slug":"newport-to-bermuda-fleet-extraordinary-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/2012\/06\/newport-to-bermuda-fleet-extraordinary-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Newport to Bermuda Fleet \u2018Extraordinary\u2019 This Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Newport-to-Bermuda.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8390\" title=\"Newport to Bermuda\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Newport-to-Bermuda-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Newport Bermuda Race chairman John Osmond is \u201cexcited\u201d about the diverse crews competing in this year\u2019s 635 mile \u2018Thrash to the Onion Patch\u2019 \u2014 and for good reason.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran American sailor, who has served on the Bermuda Race organizing committee for more than a decade, has described this year\u2019s fleet as \u201cextraordinary\u201d and is absolutely thrilled to see Bermuda Sloop Foundation\u2019s\u00a0<em>Spirit of Bermuda <\/em>make its maiden voyage in the century old race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe participants attending are an extraordinary group from boats that were built in the 1930s to boats that just came out of the mould six months ago,\u201d Mr Osmond said. \u201cWe are very excited about the spectrum of boats that are going and especially the fact that\u00a0<em>Spirit of Bermuda<\/em> is among the entries in its brand new class (Spirit of Tradition).\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_1339534846050344\">There are 166 entries competing in the race, including four Bermuda boats.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>American entry,\u00a0<em>Ragana<\/em>, withdrew from the race at the weekend after experiencing mechanical breakdown en route to Newport.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Osmond, a veteran of 15 Newport Bermuda Races, said preparations for this year\u2019s race have so far gone as planned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is going along quite smoothly fortunately for the committee which consists of 46 people who have been working for two years on this event,\u201d he said. \u201cAll the pieces have come together and everybody has been working very hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bermuda Race vice-chairman and past RBYC Commodore Les Crane added: \u201cI think registration is going very smoothly and John Osmond who is the race chairman has done a fabulous job putting all this together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re registering the boats ensuring all the paperwork is complete and that everyone is in compliance with the rules that allow them to race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Royal Bermuda Yacht Club work closely with the Cruising Club of America who are partners in this race and we\u2019re up here to ensure everyone understand what to expect when they get to Bermuda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of social events that will take place in the final lead up to the start of the race, not the least of which is the ever popular Gosling\u2019s Rum Newport Shipyard Crew Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have a great Bermudian party sponsored by Gosling\u2019s at Newport Shipyard on Wednesday night,\u201d Mr Crane said. \u201cThere will be Dark &amp; Stormies and music and it will be a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_1339534846050343\">The 2012 Newport Bermuda Race commences June 15 and concludes several days later in St David\u2019s.
