There has never been a better time to buy a multihull and the best place to see a huge selection of them is at the Fall Boat shows, particularly the huge multilhull section in the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. Here’s MQ’s quick preview of the new boats that will be on display this fall. (Published Fall 2016)
This new performance cruiser is the latest design in multihull impresario Phil Berman’s line of modern, fast cruisers. The 526 is being built by Nexus Yachts in St. Francis Bay, South Africa. The boat promises to be one of the fastest new cruising cats around and is being built on a semi-custom basis to a very high standard.
BALI CATS: 4.0. 4.3 and 4.5
Built by the Catana Group for the Dream Yachts charter and boat sales operations, Bali Cats are thoroughly modern and laid out with wide open spaces. The three boats are similar in design but each has its own characteristics. The 4.0 was the first to the market and has proven very popular. The 4.3 has a power cat version that is gaining a following.
BAVARIA OPEN 40 and 46
The Bavaria Open 40 cruising cat debuted at the Miami show in 2015 and proved a huge success. The boat sails very well and has ample accommodations for a boat of this size. This spring, Bavaria introduced the Open 46 and the boat really expands on the themes developed for the 40. This boat is a perfect size for a family or a couple who are planning extensive cruising.
Last year, Corsair Marine launched their new Pulse 600 trimaran that embodies all the best attributes of these innovative and high performance tris. The year before they introduced their new flagship, the 970. With folding amas, Corsair boats are trailerable and will also fit neatly into a regular marina slip. The Corsair 24, 750 and 28 round out the fleet. If you have the need for speed, then a Corsair trimaran is for you.
One of the largest cruising cat builders in France, and thus in the world, Fountaine Pajot will be showing their new Lucia 40 at the fall shows, in addition to their larger designs, the Helia 44 and Saba 50. The FP line finds homes both in the charter fleets of the world and as ocean going private cruising boats. The company’s emphasis has always been on offering great boats that are also a good value.
GEMINI LEGACY 35 / FREESTYLE 37
Two of the smallest cats that you would consider living aboard and cruising far and wide, the Legacy and Freestyle offer their owners an amazing amount of living space inside 34 and 37 feet. The boats are also slightly narrower than most cruising cats so they fit more easily into the monohull slips found in most marinas. These are great little cats and a great value to their owners.
LAGOON 42, 450 and 52
Based in Bordeaux, France, Lagoon has grown to become the largest builder of cruising cats in the world. You will find Lagoons in charter fleets all over the world and you also find them cruising with families about the world far and wide. Roomy, well built cruising boats with simple systems and plenty of tankage, Lagoons are robust boats that are great at sea. Lagoon is a part of Group Beneteau.
LEOPARD 40, 45 and 4800
Built by Robertson & Caine in Cape Town, South Africa, the Leopard brand is the second largest builder of cruising cats in the world. All of the company’s production goes to Tui Marine, which is the parent company of The Moorings, Sunsail and Leopard Catamarans. Buyers often compare Lagoons and Leopards when seeking solid cruising cat. It is reassuring to know that all of the cats produced by Leopard are delivered offshore on their own bottoms to their destinations worldwide.
The Maverick 44 is built in a small shop in Cape Town, South Africa by craftsmen who are passionate about their work and focused on providing excellent quality at a fair price. At 44 feet, the Maverick is a good size for a couple and is more than capable of sailing across oceans.
MARINEMAX POWER CATS
Working with Morelli & Melvin yacht designers, MarineMax has developed three interesting and modern power cats that are being sold both as private yachts and into their charter fleets. The boats are spacious, luxurious and very comfortable. With twin engines they are easy to maneuver in close quarters and economical on coastal runs. Innovative and distinctive, the new MarineMax yachts will appeal to all who want to live their dreams under power.
SEAWIND 1160 and 1190
The Seawind company started life in Australia, where it built a huge following and developed a valuable brand. Recently, they moved manufacturing to Vietnam, where labor is fairly inexpensive and the dedication to quality and detail is amazing. The boats are open plan cruisers that have sailed all over the world in comfort and at high average speeds.
- FRANCIS 50 MkII
A great offshore boat built by a boutique builder in St. Francis Bay, South Africa, the St. Francis 50 was conceived as and built as a true blue water cruiser for couples. They only build a few a year and they pour their hearts and souls into every one. Although the boats are built on a production basis, it is possible for owners to make tweaks and adjustments to fit their needs as the boats are being built. If you are heading over the horizon, the 50 would be a good boat to have under you.
The new Xquisite 5X is a 50 foot cruising cat that is perhaps the most distinctive looking cat in the fleet. With a sweeping cockpit arch and exotic styling, the 5X looks like it is ready for a mission to the stars. Once you absorb the styling, you will find beneath it one of the best built and highest quality semi-custom cruising cats on the market. Built in South Africa, the 5x offers a lot of innovative ideas and is an excellent floating home.
