(New York Daily News) – The Atlanta, a 172-foot schooner-barge was being towed along Lake Superior when it was caught in a storm on May 4, 1891. It was being towed by a steamer when its tow line snapped and the crew made it on to a liferaft only to have the raft capsize on approach to land. Two of seven crew members survived. The wreck has been well preserved by the freezing waters of Lake Superior, 650 feet deep. The boat was found by sonar in the Upper Peninsula area of Michigan. Read More
