Congratulations to Kevin Loh, Sausalito, CA who correctly answered last week’s question on autopilots in “sailing mode”. He emailed: “The data the autopilot needs for the autopilot to steer in sailing mode is the relative angle of the apparent wind. If you set the autopilot to steer the boat at 60 degrees to the apparent wind, it will continue to do so even if the true wind direction shifts. This allows you to sail without trimming sheets but it also changes your actual course as the wind shifts which can cause you to sail unintentionally into harm’s way.”
