Congratulations to Leslie Finemann, Berkley, CA who correctly answered last week’s question on early navigators. “Polynesians were skilled voyagers and navigators even though they had not invented a compass or ay other navigational aids. They used the sun, moon and stars as reference markers. They understood wind and wave patterns. They used clouds and birds to identify islands they couldn’t see over the horizon. And, they passed their knowledge of routes and distances down orally from generation to generation. They voyaged and created settlements throughout the Pacific Ocean from New Zealand in the south to Hawaii in the north.”
