What is the range of an AIS signal between two vessels in open water?

Send your answers to cruisingcompass@bwsailing.com. A winner will be drawn from the correct answers and will win a subscription to the digital version of Blue Water Sailing.

Congrats to Neil Schwartz, Huntington, NY who correctly replied to last week’s question. “Five short blasts of a ship’s horn is a danger signal intending to warn other ships and boats that the ship is underway and may have limited maneuverability. Other vessels are warned to get out of the ship’s way.”
