He developed a passion for ships and the sea after visiting a busy port and after completing his service in the Royal Air Force he boarded a ship bound for South Africa. This ocean voyage gave him a detailed understanding of ships and gave him the idea to provide British shipping companies with paintings of their ships in various ports.
