Nigel Calder Joins Forces with Outbound Yachts to Advance Offshore Cruising Systems

By George Day · On December 3, 2025

Here’s a recent news blast that will be of interest to the worldwide cruising community. Famed marine tech wizard, author and cruising sailor Nigel Calder has decided to build a new Oubound 44. The Carl Schumaker design, first launched just over 25 years ago, has become the gold standard in the performance cruising segment of the sailing market.

An integral part of the new partnership between Outbound and Calder will be having Calder bring his technical expertise and mastery of onboard systems to the build of Outbound four models from 44 to 53 feet.  Plus, he will act and a brand ambassador once his new 44 is launched and out there cruising. Here’s the press release:

Fort Lauderdale, FL – November 2025 – Outbound Yachts is pleased to announce that renowned marine author and systems expert Nigel Calder has joined the Outbound family with the purchase of a new Outbound 44. Known worldwide for his technical books and articles on boat systems, Calder is collaborating closely with Outbound’s design team to refine and enhance the yacht’s electrical and mechanical systems throughout the build.

A lifelong sailor and hands-on engineer, Calder is the author of Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual and Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair – two of the most trusted technical references in the cruising world. His collaboration with Outbound Yachts brings deep systems expertise directly into the design and execution of his new 44-footer, including innovative advances in energy management, automation, and onboard reliability.

“Outbound Yachts has earned a reputation for building solid, well-engineered, comfortable, and fast offshore cruising sailboats,” said Nigel Calder. “Working with the team on my new Outbound 44 has been a rare opportunity to integrate advanced electrical and mechanical concepts into a proven bluewater platform. This boat will serve both as a personal cruiser and a testbed for ongoing systems research.”

As part of the collaboration, Calder will also serve as a brand ambassador for Outbound Yachts, documenting key stages of the build and sharing insights from his extensive testing and cruising once the yacht is launched. His real-world feedback will support Outbound’s mission to continuously evolve its designs for long-distance sailors who prioritize safety, performance, and self-sufficiency at sea.

“Having Nigel involved in building an Outbound 44 is both an honor and an exciting opportunity,” said Michael Relyea, Managing Partner of Outbound Yachts. “His unmatched expertise in marine systems and practical, real-world approach align perfectly with our mission to build yachts that go anywhere, safely and comfortably.”

The partnership underscores Outbound Yachts’ continued commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and real-world performance – hallmarks of the builder’s reputation among serious offshore cruisers.
