What does it mean when you hear that a vessel is “hull down”?
Many thanks to everyone who sent in answers to last week’s question on the meaning of the term “Bristol fashion.” The winnner this week is regular Mindbener player Bob Pickett who emailed, “The phrase “Bristol fashion” (or “shipshape and Bristol fashion“) means that a vessel is in excellent, seamanlike order—tidy, well-maintained, and with all equipment properly stowed. More generally, it refers to anything that is in good order, neat, and clean. The term dates back to the mid-19th century and originally saw nautical use, referencing the commercial prosperity of the English port of Bristol when its shipping was renowned for being kept in top condition.”
