Guo Chuan Sets Off Toward Arctic for Northeast Passage Record Attempt

By Administrator · On August 19, 2015

Guo Chuan is the first Chinese skipper to lead an international crew to challenge a sailing world record. He will sail with four crew from France, Germany and Russia to challenge the world record in non-stop sailing along the Northeast Passage in the Arctic Ocean. The extreme challenge is set to start from northern Russian port of Murmansk on September 3 with the finish line at the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia about two weeks later.

After over two years’ preparation, Guo Chuan finally set sail towards the Arctic Ocean waters. The trimaran Qingdao China left La Trinite sur Mer as friends and fans waved “good-bye” alongside the pontoon.

The trimaran Qingdao China is famous not only for its simplicity, efficiency and solidness, but for one of the most prestigious world records set by Captain Joyon, who piloted it to complete a solo non-stop circumnavigation voyage in just 57 days 13 hours 34 minutes and 6 seconds in 2008.

However, Qingdao China’s departure date from La Trinite sur Mer was still delayed for 3 days due to weather conditions. Heading northwest, Qingdao China will sail through the English Channel, go across the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Barents Sea before arriving at Kirkenes, the northeast port of Norway. She is expected to arrive at the destination in 9 days after a 2400nm journey.
