Sailors Who Rescued Swimmer from Sea Lion Attack to Get Medal

US Sailing’s  Hanson Medal is scheduled to be awarded this weekend at the Pacific Sail and Power Boat Show in Richmond, California for the 2017 rescue in San Francisco Bay

 

BRISTOL, RI (April 13, 2018) – The US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee will award the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to a sailboat’s crew for their rescue of a swimmer injured by an attacking sea lion in San Francisco Bay. The rescuing sailors aboard Grey Goose conducted the rescue near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. They will be honored with the Hanson Rescue Medal, presented by Richard Jepsen, a member of US Sailing’s Board of Directors, at the Pacific Sail and Power Boat Show in Richmond, Calif. on April 21, 2018 at 5:30pm. The presentation will take place at the Craneway Pavilion opposite the main entrance. The public is invited to attend the presentation.

On the afternoon of December 14, 2017 with the air temperature at 60 degrees, water temperature at 50 degrees, wind speed at 10 knots, and foot-high waves, a 56-year-old man named Christian Einfeldt, was swimming less than half a mile from the beach at Aquatic Park Cove. The experienced swimmer stopped after 30 strokes to see if a predator was following him and he spotted a sea lion 6-feet away. Read more.
