When you take to the sea, whether along the coasts or across an ocean, you will have to deal with currents that will either help you on your way or impede your progress. For coastal sailing, you are dealing with both ocean currents and tides and these do not always work in harmony so you have to understand both. Offshore you only have current to deal with and often you are looking at sailing in and around major ocean currents like the Gulf Stream.
