There is good news for sailors this year aplenty now that the pandemic seems to be waning. States are dropping mask mandates, cruising countries around the world are beginning to open up and are dropping testing for vaccinated visitors. Charter fleets are up and running and have boats available. And, with the price of fuel going through the roof, there’s never been a better time to be a sailor. One of the good news items is that US Sailing will be running in-person Safety at Sea Seminars across the country this year. For the past two years, the seminars have been mostly online webinars that are informative and useful but lack the personal interaction and the back-and-forth discussion of an in-person seminar. Offshore racers are often required to take a sanctioned Safety at Sea Seminar and earn an offshore certificate. But, the seminars are not just for racers; cruisers will benefit from the shared knowledge, the introduction to seamanship and safety protocols and the frank discussions of what really works at sea and what does not. The in-person seminars are relatively inexpensive so you can bring your crew with you. If you have never taken a sanctioned Safety at Sea Seminar, I highly recommend doing so well before you head offshore.
