This week’s winner, selected at random, is Lucy Sherman, Arlington, VA, who emailed: “The zones of relatively light winds between the prevailing westerlies and the tropical trade winds at about 30 degrees north or south latitude got the nickname “Horse Latitudes” from 16th and 17th century Spanish explorers who were transporting horses to the New World. In the light winds and slow sailing, drinking water could become scarce so the horses had to be sacrificed to save the humans.”
