What is the origin of the the distress call “Mayday”?

Send your answers to george@bwsailing.com. A winner will be selected randomly from the correct answers.

Many thanks to everyone who sent in answers to last week’s question. The winner this week is Karen Trautz who emailed:  “The Big Dipper, or Ursa Major is the constellation that helps find the North Star, Polaris. Just follow the line of the outer edge of the Dipper to the next bright star. That is the North Star.”
