Cruising Compass
Question of the Week 0

Survey of the Week

By George Day · On February 11, 2025

Before reading on, please take a moment to fill out this week’s survey so we can share your knowledge and experiences with the Cruising Compass family. Thanks.

Do you ever clean the heat exchanger on your engine?

Many thanks to all readers who took the time to reply to last week’s survey on head and holding tank odor. Of those who replied, 73% have had to remedy an odor problem. The most common fix is the replacement of the hoses to the holding tank with expensive, impermeable hoses. The second most common fix is to replace both the hoses and the tank itself. Third, switching to fresh water for flushing.  Fourth, adding “blue” chemicals and then flushing thoroughly with fresh water. Fifth, making sure the air vent on the holding tank is not blocked.  Seventh, emptying the holding tank as often as possible. And, eighth, installing composting heads.
