Survey of the Week

By George Day · On January 15, 2026

Before reading on, please take a moment to fill out this week’s survey so we can share your knowledge and experiences with the Cruising Compass family. Thanks.

When maneuvering under power in close quarters, do you have to account for prop-walk in reverse?

Thanks to everyone who sent in answers to last week’s survey on how to manage and carry a dinghy when sailing offshore.  Not surprisingly, 98% of readers do have a way of carrying their dinghy out of the water when sailing offshore. 57% of those who replied have davits and 39% hoist the dinghy on deck, primarily the foredeck.  Asked if you have a preference for a way to carry a dinghy when sailing offshore, 44% said in davits,  39% said on deck and 17% said in a dinghy garage underf the cockpit.
