When using dividers to measure distance on a nautical chart with no distance scale, do you use degrees of latitude or degrees of longitude as your scale?

Send your answer to cruisingcompass@bwsailing.com. The winner, selected randomly from correct answers, will receive a Blue Water Sailing hat.

Conratulations to David Deiter who correctly answered last week’s Mindbender question: “What are you doing when you tack a sailboat with a jib or genoa without releasing the jib sheet so the sail backs on the windward side?”

“This is the first step in slowing down the boat.  If you continue to steer the boat, you are likely executing a man overboard procedure.  However, if you fix the rudder, you will be heaving to, which will allow you to take a break or weather a storm.”
