Startled, I froze, standing right in that awkward area where my presence — or rather, my big backpack — prevented the bus door from shutting. I turned around, meaning to ask, “How do you know?” But from far away at the other end of the empty night bus came the angry voice of the driver barking something in Spanish, and exactly at the same time the guy who had just gotten out continued, “I can show you where to crash for the night.”
So I hopped off, and the bus rumbled away — toward the faraway village and campsite I had in mind; the last bus of the day.
