Better in the Bahamas

By Sandy Parks · On January 10, 2020

It is only four months since Hurricane Dorian swept through the Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas causing terrible loss of life and property. Many boats were lost and businesses devastated. But the Bahamians are a resilient people and life in the Abacos is beginning to recover some sense of normalcy. Even Cruise Abaco, the main charter company in Marsh Harbour, has begun rebuilding their fleet. Many of their owners are stepping up to buy replacement boats. There is no better way to help the people of the Abacos than to go there and spend tourist dollars, especially by chartering a boat. You can have an amazing sailing vacation and be part of the recovery at the same time
.

But if you would prefer to explore the Exumas, the island chain south of Nassau that was spared by Dorian, there has never been a better time. The Moorings, Sunsail, Dream Yacht Charter and Navtours all have fleets in Nassau, which is the stepping off place for the Exumas. Considered by many veteran cruisers to be one of the world’s best cruising grounds, the Exumas are made up of 365 islands and cays, hundreds of white sand beaches, small resorts, a few small towns and many exotic anchorages. The snorkeling is superb and wildlife watching above and below the water amazing. The Exuma Land and Sea Park is one of the highlights of a cruise in the islands.

Whether you head to the Abacos or the Exumas, the spring is often the best time to charter there. In either destination, you will welcomed with warm Bahamian hospitality and great cruising.
