Okay, math wizards, here’s one for you: How do you calculate the visible horizon from the deck of your boat when you are out of sight of land?

Send your answers to cruisingcompass@bwsailing.com. A winner will be selected randomly from the correct answers and will win a one-year subscription to the digital version of Blue Water Sailing magazine.

Congratulations to Jenni Taylor-Reese of Cowes, England who offered this explanation for blue smoke in a marine diesel engine’s exhaust. “When you get blue smoke in the exhaust it means the engine is burning crankcase oil and that could be caused by worn piston rings, wrongly adjust valves or very cold weather.”
