How can algae grow inside a boat’s diesel fuel tanks?

Send your answers to cruisingcompass@bwsailing.com. A winner will be selected randomly from the correct answers and will win a one-year subscription to the digital version of Blue Water Sailing magazine.

Congratulations to Stan Lamont, Hilton Head, SC, who correctly explained how to calculate the distance from your boat to the visible horizon when at sea. “First you need to determine  the height of your eyes above the water measured in feet. Then take the square root of that number and multiply it by 1.17. Voila, distance to the horizon in nautical miles. For example, if your height of eye is nine feet and the square root of that is 3, just multiply 3 times 1.17 to get a distance to the visible horizon of 3.51 nm.”
