Congratulations to Elle Swaine, sv Elloise, in Papeete, Tahiti, who correctly identified ciguatera. “It is a toxin found in the flesh and organs of reef fish that causes ciguatera poisoning. The symptoms are similar to an allergic reaction with numb lips, tongue and cheeks, constriction of the throat and shortness of breath. The poison can cause death so many cruisers in the South Pacific carry Epi-Pens in their medical kits that provide an antidote.”
