(Tampa Bay Times) – The SS Central America, known as the Ship of Gold sank off the coast of South Carolina in a 1857 hurricane. In 1988 research scientist Tommy Thompson found the ship along with three tons of gold bars and coins. Thompson’s investors gave him over $12 million to find the ship but claim they never saw any return. About 500 gold coins are missing and Thompson has always refused to disclose the whereabouts of the coins saying he doesn’t remember.
