Before reading on, please pause for a moment to take this week’s survey so we can share the results with the Cruising Compass family.
What sort of emergency signaling devices do you carry on your boat?
Thanks to all who answered last week’s survey on keeping water fresh aboard your boats. Of those who answered, 51% add bleach to the tanks, 41% have in-line water filters for drinking water, 36% filter water as they fill 16their tanks, 22% have a water maker, 16$ add a commercial water sweetener and 1% add chlorine, There were several good comments and suggestions.
“We have Whole house filter filtering all water to all faucets, shower, etc.”
“Our tanks are aluminum thus chlorine cannot be used. Upon research we learned they use this on farms. We buy from a health food store 30-33% food grade hydrogen peroxide. It must be kept cold but you use small amounts. We also use a table top Brita filter pitcher.”
:Use the water. Don’t let it sit and be selective if you can about what water you put in the tanks.”
“Dock Side Solutions Water Filter Unit – 5mic to 1mic carbon block to UV filter with flow restrictor so water does not pass through the UV filter at an unacceptably high rate to get full UV treatment. No water in the tanks other than via this filter unit or RO water maker.”
“After flushing the tanks in the spring, I buy a cheep handle of vodka and add it to the tank after filling it. It may not do anything but it gets me to at least drink it.”
