Congratulations to Erik Hassen, Beaufort, SC, who correctly identified an MMSI number. “The MMSI number, or Maritime Mobile Service Identifier, is a nine digit number that you program into you rVHF radio as it’s phone number for Digital Selective Calling (DSC). You also can program it into your AIS for emergency identification. BOATUS issues MMSI numbers for recreational boaters, not commercial, and the registration information is passed along to the Coast Guard which enters into their database for search ans rescue response. As a professional captain, I’d like to say that if you don’t have a VHF with DSC, you should get one and then register with BOATUS to get an MMSI.”
