We’re getting close to D-Day for boats heading to the Caribbean, usually around November 1 when most insurance companies allow boats to head into the tropics. While we’re all preoccupied with getting boats and crew ready for the passages south, there is still the question of what is the Caribbean like these days? What are we getting ourselves into once we are there? There are a number of resources for getting answers to questions about getting to and enjoying cruising in the Caribbean, but one of the very best is provided by the Salty Dawg Sailing Association. Their online webinars, archived from the last two years, as well as new upcoming webinars, cover just about everything you need to know about getting to the Caribbean and how to have the most successful time cruising the islands. The webinars are free to members and cost $12 each for non-members. The Seven Seas Sailing Association also runs webinars and provides a knowledge base that are available to members and non-members on a range of topics for cruisers. Also, regarding crime, check out the Caribbean Safety and Security Net webpage for incident report. In the weeks prior to setting off to the deep blue yonder and the fantastic islands of the Caribbean, take some screen time to watch relevant webinars so you will be ready for island life and all the pleasures, challenges and complications that life entails.
