Before reading on, please take a moment to fill out this week’s survey so we can share your knowledge and experiences with the Cruising Compass family. Thanks.
Many thanks to everyone who took the time to reply to last week’s survey on setting up a home office on your boat. Of those who replied, 54% have set up a well equipped home office. The tools most readers are using are pretty obvious but they are in order: Laptop, internet connection/Starlink, cell phone, wi-fi hot spots, cell-phone hot-spots, printer, scanner, printer and sat phone.
The most common work activities are in order: running my own business, consulting in my field, managing my investments/real estate, and creating content for social media. Most readers( 55%)work from their boats three months or less a year, while 32% are aboard for six months or more and 13% live aboard full time.
Asked to comment on what makes working aboard successful, everyone mentioned internet connection and Starlink is obviously a game changer. Others mentioned having customers or clients who are appreciative of the cruising lifestyle. And, several mentioned having both a quiet place aboard to work and an understanding partner or crew. A few readers mentioned the need for everyone involved to realize that schedules when cruising are problematical
