This summer has been remarkable for dramatic heat waves and furious fires around the world. The Canadian boreal forest is blazing, fires are ripping through the mountains in Washington state and Oregon, and the south of France and central Spain aare going up ion smoke.
What happening is not all El Nino’s fault but the monster that is forming on the eastern South Pacific is exacerbating the steady warming of planet earth. The oceans are warmer, the air hotter, the forests drier and sparks are flying.
“El Niño is not just on our doorstep — it is inside the house and turning up the heat,” said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres. “And this is only a warm-up act. El Niño is strengthening — adding fuel to a planet already on fire with scorching heat domes, apocalyptic wildfires, and record hot seas.”
